Oliver Cromwell (25 April 1599 – 3 September 1658)^[a] adalah seorang pemimpin militer dan politik Inggris yang kelak menjadi Lord Protector dari Persemakmuran Inggris, Skotlandia, dan Irlandia.

Cromwell terlahir dalam keluarga priayi menengah, tergolong keturunan dari saudari Thomas Cromwell, salah seorang menteri Raja Henry VIII. Hanya sedikit informasi yang diketahui seputar 40 tahun pertama kehidupannya karena hanya empat surat pribadinya yang terlestarikan bersama dengan sebuah ringkasan kata sambutan yang ia sampaikan pada tahun 1628.^[1] Ia menjadi seorang Puritan Independen setelah mengalami suatu konversi agama pada tahun 1630-an, menganut suatu pandangan yang relatif toleran terhadap banyak aliran Protestan yang lain pada zamannya.^[2] Dikatakan bahwa ia adalah seorang yang sangat religius. Ia juga menyebut dirinya sebagai seorang Musa Puritan dan sangat meyakini kalau Allah menuntun dirinya menuju kemenangan-kemenangan yang diraihnya. Ia terpilih sebagai Anggota Parlemen untuk Huntingdon pada tahun 1628, serta untuk Cambridge dalam Short Parliament (1640) dan Long Parliament (1640–1649). Ia melibatkan diri dalam Perang Saudara Inggris di pihak para "Roundhead" atau kaum Parlementarian. Berjulukan "Old Ironsides", ia memperlihatkan kecakapannya sebagai seorang komandan militer dan dengan cepat meraih promosi jabatan, dari seorang pemimpin satu pasukan kavaleri menjadi salah seorang komandan utama New Model Army, yang memainkan suatu peranan penting dalam kekalahan pasukan kerajaan (royalis).

Cromwell termasuk salah seorang penandatangan surat perintah eksekusi Raja Charles I pada tahun 1649, dan mendominasi Persemakmuran Inggris yang hanya berumur singkat sebagai seorang anggota Rump Parliament (1649–1653). Ia terpilih untuk memegang komando dalam kampanye militer Inggris di Irlandia pada tahun 1649–1650. Pasukan Cromwell mengalahkan koalisi Konfederasi dan Royalis di Irlandia serta menduduki negara tersebut, menyebabkan berakhirnya Perang Konfederasi Irlandia. Selama periode ini, terjadi pengesahan serangkaian Hukum Pidana yang ditujukan terhadap para penganut Katolik Roma (kelompok minoritas yang signifikan di Inggris dan Skotlandia, namun merupakan mayoritas luas di Irlandia), dan penyitaan sejumlah besar lahan mereka. Pada tanggal 20 April 1653, ia membubarkan Rump Parliament secara paksa, membentuk suatu majelis yang berumur singkat yang dikenal dengan sebutan Parlemen Barebone, sebelum ia diundang oleh sesamanya pemimpin untuk memerintah sebagai Lord Protector Inggris (yang meliputi Wales pada saat itu), Skotlandia, dan Irlandia dari tahun 16 Desember 1653.^[3] Sebagai penguasa, ia menjalankan suatu kebijakan luar negeri yang efektif dan agresif. Ia meninggal dunia karena sebab alami pada tahun 1658 dan dimakamkan di Westminster Abbey. Cromwell merupakan salah seorang figur yang paling kontroversial dalam sejarah Kepulauan Britania, dipandang sebagai seorang diktator perancang eksekusi pemimpin monarki oleh sejarawan-sejarawan seperti David Sharp,^[4] seorang diktator militer oleh Winston Churchill,^[5] namun dipandang sebagai seorang pahlawan kebebasan oleh John Milton, Thomas Carlyle, dan Samuel Rawson Gardiner, serta seorang tokoh revolusi kelas sosial oleh Leon Trotsky.^[6] Dalam suatu jajak pendapat tahun 2002 di Britania, dengan disponsori oleh sejarawan militer Richard Holmes, Cromwell terpilih sebagai salah seorang di antara sepuluh orang Britania terbesar sepanjang masa.^[7] Bagaimanapun, tindakan-tindakannya terhadap umat Katolik di Skotlandia dan Irlandia diidentifikasi sebagai genosida atau menyerupai genosida,^[8] dan rekam jejaknya dikritik tajam di Irlandia.^[9]
