Patricia Highsmith (19 Januari 1921 – 4 Februari 1995)^[1] adalah seorang novelis dan penulis cerita pendek Amerika, yang dikenal atas cerita seru psikologi buatannya, yang dibuat dalam lebih dari dua puluh adaptasi film. Novel pertamanya, Strangers on a Train, telah diadaptasi untuk drama dan layar lebar beberapa kali, terutama oleh Alfred Hitchcock pada 1951. Highsmith menulis 22 novel, yang meliputi serial lima novel buatannya dengan Tom Ripley sebagai protagonis, dan beberapa cerita pendek. Eksistensialisme adalah gerakan kesusastraan yang banyak mempengaruhi penulisannya, dengan "Dostoyevsky dan Gide sampai Camus dan Sartre" menjadi para pengarang favoritnya.^[2] Diterbitkan di bawah pseudonim "Claire Morgan", Highsmith menulis novel lesbian pertama dengan akhir bahagia, The Price of Salt, yang diterbitkan ulang 38 tahun kemudian dengan judul Carol dengan namanya sendiri.
