エドウィン・ジェームス・ヒューストン（Edwin James Houston、1847年7月9日 - 1914年3月1日）は、アメリカ合衆国の電気技師、学者、実業家、発明家、著述家である。

生涯

ヒューストンは、1847年7月9日にバージニア州アレクサンドリアで生まれた。1864年にフィラデルフィア中央高校（英語版）（普通の高校ではなく、学位を授与する権限を持つ機関）を卒業した^[1]。同校より学士号(Bachelor of Arts)と修士号(master's degree)の両方を取得し、その後、同校の土木工学の教授を短期間務めた後、自然哲学と自然地理学の学科長となった。また、プリンストン大学から名誉博士号が授与された。彼はまた、フランクリン研究所（英語版）の物理学の名誉教授、Medico-Chirurgical Collegeの物理学の教授を務めた^[2]。

フィラデルフィア中央高校で物理学を教えている間、彼は学生時代の同期のエリフ・トムソンのアーク灯発電機の設計を手助けした。2人は1882年にトムソン・ヒューストン・エレクトリックを設立し、まもなくマサチューセッツ州リンに移転した^[3]。ヒューストンは、1884年にフィラデルフィアで開かれた国際電気展示会で主任電気技師を務めた。

1892年、トムソン・ヒューストン社はエジソン・ゼネラル・エレクトリック・カンパニーと合併してゼネラル・エレクトリックとなり、トムソン・ヒューストン社の経営陣が新しい会社の主要な経営者となった。 1894年、ヒューストンはアーサー・ケネリーともに電気工学のコンサルティング会社を設立した。彼とケネリーは、1894年より一連の書籍を共同で執筆・刊行し、それらは「電気工学の入門書」と呼ばれた。

ヒューストンは、アメリカ電気学会(AIEE)の会長を1893年から1895年までの2期務めた^[4]。彼は、アメリカ電気委員会、アメリカ鉱業学会（英語版）、アメリカ哲学会（英語版）など多くの学会の会員だった^[5]。

彼はまた、"The Wonder Book of Science"と呼ばれる一連の本を執筆した。このシリーズには、The Wonder Book of Volcanoes and Earthquakes、The Wonder Book of the Atmosphere、The Wonder Book of Light、Wonder Book of Magnetismなどがある^[6]。

彼は1914年に心不全で亡くなった^[7]。
