Pod względem muzycznym album The Great Annihilator zwraca się w kierunku bardziej gitarowego, intensywnego i rytmicznego brzmienia, w pewnym stopniu odwołuje się również do melodyjnej stylistyki wcześniejszych płyt zespołu z lat 90. Autorem utworów na płycie jest Michael Gira (współautorką muzyki w „My Buried Child” i „Out” jest Jarboe).

W 2017 nakładem Young God Records i Mute Records ukazała się dwupłytowa reedycja pod tytułem The Great Annihilator / Drainland. Na pierwszym dysku znajdują się te same utwory, które weszły w skład reedycji z 2002, natomiast drugi dysk zawiera solowy album Michaela Giry Drainland z 1995[3]:
