Türk fes kaktüsü olarak da bilinen ''Melocactus' (kavun kaktüsü), kaktüs familyasının yaklaşık 30-40 türe sahip bir cins'idir. Karayipler, batı Meksika ila Orta Amerika ve kuzey Güney Amerika'ya özgüdürler, And dağları boyunca güneye Peru ya ve ve kuzeydoğuda Brezilya bir tür konsantrasyonu kadar bazı türler bulunur.[1]
İlk tür 1753 yılında Carl Linnaeus tarafından “Cactus melocactus” olarak adlandırılmıştır. Cins “Cactus” ten ayrılırken Linnaean öncesi “Melocactus” adı kullanılmıştır. 1922'de öncelik ilkesi'ne göre hareket ederek Nathaniel Britton ve Joseph Rose Linnaeus'u diriltti ''Kaktüs. Ancak 1905 Viyana botanik kongresi Cactus adını zaten reddetmişti, bu yüzden bu isim mevcut değildi ve Melocactus Link & Otto doğru cins adıdır.[1]
Olgun bitkiler, bitkinin tepesinde küçük çiçeklerin büyüdüğü bir areole kütlesi içeren yün ve kıl kaplı bir yapı olan cephalium ile kolayca tanınır.[1] Bitkinin kırmızı, yün kaplı cephalium'u, Türk geç Osmanlı İmparatorluğu dönemindeki erkek vatandaşların fese benzediğinden, bitki isimlerinden birisi Türk fes kaktüsüdür.[2][3]
Melocactus meyveleri pembe renkli olup, biber meyvesi şeklini andırır. Bu cinsin meyveleri yenilebilir ve vahşi doğada sıklıkla kertenkeleler ve kuşlar tarafından dağıtılır.[4]
