アルヴァ・ノト（Alva Noto）の活動名で知られるカールステン・ニコライ (Carsten Nicolai、1965年- ) は、ドイツのミュージシャン。ジャンルはエレクトロニカ・グリッチ（英語版）・ミクロサウンド（英語版）・実験音楽など。坂本龍一とのコラボレーションにより日本国内での知名度も高まった。実験音楽のミュージシャン、池田亮司とのユニット・Cyclo.での活動でも知られる。

少年時代に蝙蝠に魅せられ、蝙蝠とコミュニケーションがとれると信じていた。それが音楽的興味や外見に影響を及ぼしているとされる。建築とランドスケープデザインを学んだのち、音と空間の理論的性質へ興味をいだき追求しはじめた。

彼は音をループ回路のオシレータと音声信号発振器を用いて変形させる。シークエンサーは使用しないが、リズム構造を曲に加えるための編集は行なっている。クリック音、グリッチは装飾的な添加ではなく、曲の根源的なリズムや和声的要素として用いられる。ファクシミリの音やモデム、電話のピッピッという音やボタンを押す音といった日常の何気ない音の素材をしばしば引用し曲に取り入れている。

略歴

• 1965年、東ドイツのカール＝マルクス＝シュタット（現在のケムニッツ）で生まれる。
• 1990年代前半にベルリンに移住し、実験音楽レーベルであるNotonを創設。Notonを通じて、自身のコンセプチュアルで実験的な音楽関連のメディアを発表。
• 1996年にオラフ・ベンダー(Byetone)と共にレーベル名をRaster-Noton. Archiv Für Ton Und Nichtton(音と非音のアーカイヴ)とした。
• 2005年より東京代官山UNIT、京都CLUB METRO、大阪sunsuiなどでライブをするRaster-Noton Japan Tourに出演。2011年では東京でのハウスを題名のもとにもなったunitから渋谷WOMBに移し、レーベルの15周年を祝った。同日新作であるUnivrsの日本限定版をリリースした。
